Dutch is the primary language of the Netherlands, also known as Holland. There are roughly 23 million native speakers, and that number rises to 28 million when you add in people who speak it as a second language. This is due to the simplicity of the language. Thanks to its Germanic roots, Dutch is probably the easiest foreign language for native English speakers to learn. The language also has a distant relative in the South African language, Afrikaans. Let Languages in Motion build relationships between you and your communities with our Dutch translation and interpreting services.
The Dutch are historically known for their international trade, so even though there are few of them, their language still prevails across the globe, from Europe to Africa. Alongside French and German, it is one of the three official languages of Belgium. It is also the language of the entity, Netherlands Antilles, and includes Suriname and the islands of Curaçao, Sint Maarten, Aruba, Bonaire, Saba, and Sint Eustatius. Afrikaans, which is a derivative of Dutch, is one of the official languages of South Africa.
Although they are similar languages, Flemish and Dutch have several differences, mainly pronunciation, vocabulary (Netherlands Dutch has an English influence with Flemish having a French influence) and the role of informal languages. It should be noted that Flemish is spoken in northern Belgium, which borders Holland.
