Spanish has the second largest number of native speakers and is the third most widely used language on the internet. While there are over 470 million native speakers, there are also another 90 million who speak Spanish as a second language. It is also one of the most widely dispersed languages, with 44 countries worldwide with at least three million native speakers of Spanish. It is the official language of 21 countries, including Argentina, Chile, Peru, Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica, and of course, Spain. Languages in Motion enables you to connect with all of the different Spanish communities in your city or abroad.
Spanish or Castilian Spanish is one of the most important global languages. A member of the Ibero-Romance sub-family of the Romance language family, Spanish developed from Vulgar Latin – the “spoken” Latin brought to the area by the Roman Empire. At the height of the Spanish empire, the language spread to South America, the Spanish East Indies, which includes the present-day Philippines, and Mexico, which today has the largest Spanish-speaking population of any country. However, each country has different local varieties of the Spanish language.
Español (the word Spanish in Spanish) can be grouped into several categories: Castilian Spanish (originating from Spain), Mexican, Central American (such as Cuba, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Panama and the Gulf Coast Mexico), Chilean, Andean-Pacific (including the likes of Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador), Rioplatense (originating from Argentina, Uruguay, Bolivia, and Paraguay).
The main differences include pronunciation of words and vowels, grammar, such as verb tenses for past events, and vocabulary. Regardless of the differences between Spanish dialects and regions, we can pair you with the right certified translator to be mindful of these differences.
At Languages in Motion, we use an effective localization strategy. We ask you what the target audience is and tailor the translator or interpreter’s expertise and background to this region. This ensures you can communicate effectively and better connect with the world.
