What is a NAATI-Certified Translator

NAATI is an organization that stands for National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters, and it permits people who know more than one language to become a translator or an interpreter. This organization issues certifications to acknowledge and certify people who can accurately translate. Different levels of these certifications depend on the mastery of a language and the ability to translate. NAATI certification is often the base-level language required to work in the esteemed fields of law, medicine, banking, and many community services. Translators certified under NAATI have vast amounts of experience in these fields, and these certified translators are qualified to work in a myriad of situations.

How do you become certified under NAATI, and how does it work?

When approaching NAATI certification, the organization will evaluate you to see if you’re competent enough to begin training and further practicing as an interpreter or translator. Because the work of someone with a NAATI certificate is so paramount, the certification process and standards that need to be met can be quite extensive. Although standards will vary depending on the certificate level you seek to attain, with levels ranging from a fundamental accreditation to more advanced. To become certified with NAATI, you can undertake different pathways, including taking a test of some sort, proving your proficiency in a language, testing and submitting an application.

Application and test

An application is necessary to become a certified translator with NAATI, and knowing what to include within the application hinges on whether or not you can eventually receive your certification. In an application, a photo is paramount, and they must abide by specific guidelines. Guidelines for photos can include:

  • A photo that is less than six months old.
  • A clear focus on your face.
  • Your face looks directly into the camera.

More so, you must submit your proof of identity, among other files that could consist of reference letters and academic transcripts. Once you pay the necessary application fee, you can submit your complete application and eventually take the Credentialed Community Language test (CCL) or Community Language Aide test (CLA). These tests will assess your language abilities and communication skills.

What a NAATI-certified translator can do

While the process of becoming a NAATI translator is integral, you still might be wondering what work a NAATI translator does. A NAATI-certified translator holds a certain standard when translating binding documents from government sectors, courts of law, and immigration services. Certified translators must sign off on these documents, showcasing that they have been adequately translated. These translations are needed for contracts, affidavits, and government documents like birth certificates. Essentially, any document that needs to pass through a government body needs to translate by someone certified to do so.
