Whatever dealings you might have with CIC, it is important for them to know who you really are and what your civil status is. A civil status document refers to a legal record of the important events in the lives of the citizens and residents of a country. A civil status document, therefore, can be seen as an identity document but an identity document is not necessarily a civil status document. These documents are important for a number of reasons, and if they are in a language other than French or English will need a certified translation done by a certified translator.

First, your civil rights as a citizen or resident can only be protected if the government knows who you are.

Second, these documents reduce the incidence of identity fraud.

Third, they help the government to create a database for the compilation of vital statistics and this is why foreign nationals in particular who cannot produce any civil status documents raise particular problems when it comes to the establishment of records concerning their civil status.

Fourth, they can provide a historical timeline as evidence for one’s claimed identity.

Fifth, documents such as marriage certificates and divorce certificates provide proof of a relationship to a sponsor in Canada, for those coming to Canada through a spouse/partner.

Lastly, in rare cases death certificates may sometimes need to be provided, if this certificate is in a language other than English or French, it and/or the other documents mentioned may need to be certified translated.
